‘Tale’ discussions begin Tuesday

The 13th installment of the “A Tale for Three Counties” community reading project begins this week with the first of 18 planned book discussions.

The first discussion is slated for 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pike Library, 65 Main St., Pike. The others will follow over the next seven weeks, leading up to the author visit March 26-28.

This year’s selection is “We Are Called to Rise,” the debut novel from Laura McBride.

The book tells an interweaving story through the voices of its four main characters: Bashkim, an 8-year-old son of Albanian refugees; Avis, a 53-year-old woman struggling with the end of her marriage and the concerns about her soldier son, Nate; Roberta, a court-appointed advocate for children working in the dark side of Las Vegas; and Spec. Luis Rodriguez-Reyes, a soldier who wakes up in the hospital after a traumatic event in Afghanistan.

Along with the book discussions, Richmond Memorial Library will host a talk about court-appointed special advocates on March 5, as it directly relates to the circumstances in the novel. On March 19, Warsaw Public Library will also host a screening of the film “The Way We Get By,” which documents airport greeters who welcome returning soldiers at all hours.
